It's Appreciation Week!

These are some of the hardest working hands around. Teachers, nurses and moms, working tirelessly, day in and day out, to serve those in their community. KG is taking this week to honor them during Nurse Appreciation Week, Teacher Appreciation Week and with Mother’s Day coming up on Sunday. This week we are focusing on two special KG nurses, and soon we will focus on some special KG teachers and moms!

Gigi, our 91 year old grandma (and called by this name because she is a great grandmother to 14 great grandkids!) was recently hospitalized. She had excellent care during her hospital stay because of some really great nurses! Our cousin and KG supporter, Katie, is one of those amazing nurses at our local hospital. She came everyday to check on Gigi and answer our many questions. Our loyal follower and very good friend, Maggie, also works as a nurse at the hospital, and went out of her way to make sure Gigi was well-taken care of during her stay. Even the daytime nurse for Gigi, who was a stranger to us, was so very kind to her and was calling her by her nickname by the second day. We feel so lucky to have care like this available to our loved ones. It truly takes a very special person to care for others, day in and day out, and do it well.

Nursing, teaching and parenting are all jobs with long hours, few breaks, and are mentally and physically exhausting. Yet, also very rewarding because of the difference you are making in lives daily! These are just a few of the many reasons that we would like to honor these exceptional people in our lives. Help us honor those who serve others by, reading on to learn more about these two special nurses, thank a nurse, teacher or mom you know, and tell them about our special discount code for them. Use APPRECIATIONWEEK20 to splurge on yourself or a nurse, teacher or mom that you appreciate.

Meet Katie H. (pictured above)

Why did you get into nursing?

“I always knew I wanted to work in healthcare. I was drawn to nursing because I wanted a career that is challenging, interesting, and makes a difference in people’s lives on a daily basis. I also love having the opportunity for growth and development.”

What makes a great nurse?

“I think a great nurse is caring, compassionate, and has a true desire to help people when they are at their worst. Time management is also something a great nurse has. Nurses work in a fast paced environment and are pulled in a million different directions. Being able to prioritize needs and still make time for the patient to feel well cared for and safe makes a great nurse.”

Tell us about your daily schedule.

“Wake up before the sun, wash face, brush teeth, light makeup, put on scrubs and put hair in a pony tail. Each day at work is never the same but no doubt putting a smile on my face and taking the day as it comes.”

How do you handle a difficult day at work?

I’m a true believer of asking for help when things get tough because you can’t do it all.”

What inspires you?

“Inspiration comes in many different forms but for me, it’s my boys. My kids give me the perspective that all the things I think are important, really aren’t. It’s being a good person the end of the day and appreciate the little the butterfly going by, the sound of wind, the beautiful flowers, and being together.”

What are your hobbies?

“Photography, I absolutely love capturing the beautiful moments in my life.”

What are some of your style essentials?

A small pair of earrings, bracelets, and anything that makes me feel pretty.”

What do you wish people knew about nurses?

I wish people appreciated them more. Quite honestly they are the ones taking care of you 12+ hours in the day. They make sure your medication is on time, you are comfortable, you are safe, aware of slight changes in your condition, which might save your life. In my opinion, they are the rock stars.

What’s your favorite piece in your closet and why?

This beautiful white lacy dress from Anthropology. It means a lot to me because after my sons diagnosis of Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy, we had a family photo shoot and wearing that dress made me feel pretty, in my darkest days.”

Favorite KG piece and why?

My custom, K4EVER bracelet because it has a meaningful message, and I love it!”

What advice would you give to aspiring nurses?

Give yourself time to learn and be open to changes because nursing is constantly changing and evolving and nurses have to adjust to these changes rather quickly.”

Champagne or wine? Definitely Champagne”

Night owl or morning person?

“Morning person, but not on the weekends!”

Sweet or salty? “Salty”

Beach or Mountains? “Beach all the way!”

Jeans or a dress? “Jeans”

Teach our followers something. Anything!

“Love yourself and never take life for granted.”

What’s your favorite ‘90s jam?

“Oh that’s tough! I really love music and don’t have a favorite genre. But I would have to say anything Mariah Carey or Whitney Houston.”

What is your next travel destination?

“Arizona for a Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy conference.”

How do you define beauty?

To me it’s not about fashion. It’s being completely comfortable in your own skin and being a genuinely nice person.”
