Shop Small!

This weekend millions of shoppers will flock to big box retailers in order to find the perfect gifts for their loved ones. Before you face the crowded big box stores this weekend, consider shopping at a small business this season. Here are some reasons you should consider skipping out on the big box chaos.

It Benefits the Community

    • A series of studies by the research firm Civic Economics found that 48 percent of purchases at local independent businesses go right back into the community, compared to less than 14 percent of sales made at chain stores.
    • Local and small businesses pay taxes that help support public schools, parks, local construction projects, fund public services, and volunteer organizations like fire departments.

Better Customer Service

    • Small business owners depend on the success of their business and customers that want to return. These business owners are able to give you more personable, hands-on, and memorable customer service you won’t find at a big box store.

Create Local Jobs

    • Every $10 million of spending at a local business creates 57 jobs, whereas the same spending at a big box retailer only creates about 14 jobs at a non-local level.

Increase Local Real Estate Values

    • Neighborhoods with successful small businesses can see home values increase 50 percent on average. Having successful and desirable small businesses in the area make more people want to move to the area.
    • When more people in the area support the small businesses it also increases local tax revenue, which can be invested into schools, libraries, and public works projects.

Better Prices

    • Often times the prices at small businesses are extremely competitive! The people owning these stores depend on them to make their living, so they need to compete with big box retailers.

How can you help?

  • Shop small and not just on small business Saturday.
    • (Small Business Saturday is November 24, 2018 this year)
  • Post about your favorite small businesses! Show support for your favorite small shops online so your friends and family can also show them some support.
  • If you own a small business, promote Small Business Saturday. You can help yourself and other small businesses by sending out emails and social networks posts reminding people to shop small in their community.
